The Maasai People

One of the more interesting features of rural Kenya and Tanzania are the Maasai people and their villages.  If you google “Maasai” you will find tons of information and thousands of wonderful amateur and professional photos of these traditional hold-outs who are valiantly fighting off modern methods and life-style.

This small collection of my photos is not an attempt to compete or add to the wonders you can already find on the web. It is presented to whet your appetite and to document a few encounters during our three weeks in those two countries. This sample represents what you can realistically expect to see on safari in those countries.

Every day I get older, I seem to forget more of my past. This is for me, too.

A note about picture quality: many of these pictures were shot through the closed window of a moving bus. Others (especially the photos of children) were taken with a hand-held 500mm lens. Yet others are edits (a small portion of a picture blown up greatly) necessary because many of the Maasai are reluctant to become photographic curiosities. One was taken from a hot air balloon. All were taken by a shaky old guy in his 70’s with a new camera.
